# What Interior Car Detailing Covers in North County

November 6, 2026 · Julian

A quick vacuum makes a cabin look better for a day. An interior detail is the deeper reset: seats, carpets, mats, plastics, glass, jambs and vents cleaned as a system, with chemistry matched to the material and moisture kept under control. This post explains what that work covers, where Express and Executive diverge, and what it does not include, so you can book the right visit instead of guessing from a package name.

It is a guide, not a copy of the [interior detail](https://rotesandroses.com/auto-detailing/interior-detail/) service page. Prices and times cited here are the published starting points from that page as of November 5, 2026. Confirm your total before work starts.

## See What an Interior Detail Includes

Compare Express and Executive on the interior service page, then book with photos of the cabin.

## TL;DR

- An interior detail resets seats, carpets, mats, plastics, glass and the trunk. Express handles lived-in cars; Executive adds extraction and full steam for stains, embedded hair and odors that survive a surface clean.
- Published sedan prices: Express Interior from $174.99 (about 1.5 to 2.5 hours). Executive Interior from $284.99 (about 4 to 6 hours). SUVs, trucks and vans cost more.
- Pet hair, trash, mold, biohazard and heavy odor work are priced as add-ons or separate specialty jobs, not hidden inside the base package.
- DIY helps between visits. Over-wetting fabric, soaking perforated leather and masking smells with scent are the mistakes that create bigger jobs later.
- We come to you with our own water and power. Julian handles the job start to finish and confirms the price before work begins.

## What an interior detail actually covers

A wash and vacuum removes loose dirt. An interior detail goes after what is stuck in the fibers, the grain of the leather and the seams you do not reach with a handheld vacuum. Trade groups describe detailing as a thorough cleaning and restoration of a vehicle’s surfaces rather than a quick wash, and that definition matters most inside the cabin, where materials vary and moisture has to be controlled.

A complete interior detail typically includes:

- Full vacuum of seats, carpets, floor mats, trunk or cargo area, and crevices along seat rails and center console.
- Cleaning of dashboard, door panels, console, cupholders, steering wheel and switches with chemistry matched to the material.
- Interior glass cleaned streak-free, including the inside of the windshield where film builds from plastic off-gassing and hand oils.
- Seat and carpet work: Express handles surface soil; Executive adds hot-water extraction and steam where the material allows.
- Floor mats cleaned separately so grit does not get walked back onto the carpet.
- Air vents brushed so dust does not blow back onto a clean dash the next time you run the fan.
- A finish wipe so plastics look clean without a greasy shine that attracts dust.

What it does not automatically include: removing and reinstalling seats, cutting out stained foam, repairing torn upholstery, or guaranteeing that every old odor is gone. Those jobs need inspection, and some of them belong under [odor treatment](https://rotesandroses.com/odor-removal/), [mold removal](https://rotesandroses.com/mold-removal/) or [biohazard decontamination](https://rotesandroses.com/biohazard-decontamination/) instead of a standard interior package.

If you want the outside done in the same visit, that is a [full detail](https://rotesandroses.com/auto-detailing/full-detail/), which packages interior and exterior together for less than booking both separately. Our [car detailing packages](https://rotesandroses.com/blog/car-detailing-packages/) guide compares the three main package types.

## Express vs Executive: what changes

Names vary shop to shop. On our site the split is Express and Executive, and the difference is depth, not marketing.

| | Express Interior | Executive Interior |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Best for | Lived-in cars that need a reset | Stains, embedded pet hair, odors that survive wiping |
| Time (typical) | 1.5 to 2.5 hours | 4 to 6 hours |
| Sedan / coupe starts at | $174.99 | $284.99 |
| Carpet and cloth | Vacuum and crevice work | Express first, then extraction |
| Steam | Spot use as needed | Full steam where material allows |
| Leather | Cleaned and conditioned | Cleaned and conditioned with more dwell on soiled areas |
| Pet hair | Add-on ($40 / $65 / $90) | Light included; medium $25; heavy $55 |

Express is the right call when the cabin looks used but not wrecked: dust on the dash, crumbs in the seats, fingerprints on the console, mats that need a real wash. Executive is the call when staining has set into cloth, sand has worked into carpet backing, pet hair is woven into fabric, or the car smells like something that wiping will not fix.

If you are comparing quotes from other shops, match the line items, not the package names. Our [premium vs standard](https://rotesandroses.com/blog/premium-vs-standard-mobile-detailing/) post walks through that comparison in more detail.

## Published prices by vehicle size

Prices below are published on the live [interior detail](https://rotesandroses.com/auto-detailing/interior-detail/) and [auto detailing](https://rotesandroses.com/auto-detailing/) pages. They are starting points for a sedan, SUV or truck, or van or XL vehicle in serviceable condition. Dirt load, access and add-ons change the confirmed total.

| Vehicle | Express Interior | Executive Interior |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Sedan or coupe | $174.99 | $284.99 |
| SUV or truck | $224.99 | $344.99 |
| Van or XL | $274.99 | $414.99 |

A full Inside & Out (interior plus exterior in one visit) starts at $234.99 Express and $444.99 Executive for a sedan, which is less than booking the two halves separately. See the [full car detail](https://rotesandroses.com/auto-detailing/full-detail/) page for those package prices and the Signature options that add the engine bay and ceramic glass coating.

We confirm the price before we start. Photos help when the cabin is heavily soiled, and a flat $50 deposit holds the appointment and applies to the final balance.

## What moves the quote: pet hair, sand, stains, trash

The base package assumes a car that people drive. Certain conditions take extra time, and those are priced in the open rather than buried in a surprise.

**Pet hair.** On Express, pet hair is an add-on: $40 light, $65 medium, or $90 heavy. On Executive, light pet hair is included; medium is $25 and heavy is $55. Light means minimal hair through the cabin with a few heavier spots. Medium is obvious hair across seats and carpet. Heavy is hair packed into fabric, under seats and along the headliner edge. Severe pet contamination can cross into [biohazard decontamination](https://rotesandroses.com/biohazard-decontamination/), which starts at $249 per instance and needs inspection first. See [pet hair removal](https://rotesandroses.com/pet-hair-removal/) for add-on pricing and tiers.

**Sand.** Beach sand behaves like grit underfoot and lodges in carpet backing, seat rails and under mats. Vacuuming alone rarely finishes the job. Extraction and careful rail cleaning take time, which is why a coastal daily driver often lands in Executive rather than Express.

**Stains and spills.** Fresh spills are easier than old ones. Spot extraction is a $50 add-on; full extraction is $160. Both are detail add-ons, not whole-car prices, and the right tier depends on what was spilled and how far it reached. See [spill cleanup](https://rotesandroses.com/spill-cleanup/).

**Trash.** Trash removal is $20, or $45 when cleanup takes more than about 10 to 15 minutes. Extreme cases are quoted separately. Mention it when you book so the visit is scheduled with the right time pad.

**Child seats.** We clean around them. We do not uninstall and reinstall child seats. The American Academy of Pediatrics stresses correct installation for crash safety, and reseating a restraint is outside a detailing scope. Remove the seat yourself before the appointment if you want the fabric underneath cleaned.

## Leather, vinyl, cloth and Alcantara

Different materials need different chemistry. Product guides for interior restoration stress matching the cleaner to the surface and keeping moisture under control, especially on fabric foam and perforated leather.

**Leather.** Most modern automotive leather has a protective topcoat. Clean with a leather-safe product on a towel or soft brush, wipe the soil away, and condition lightly so the surface does not dry out or crack.

Modern automotive leather usually has a protective topcoat. A [Toyota leather-cleaning bulletin (T-SB-0009-18)](https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2018/MC-10131750-9999.pdf) on NHTSA’s site tells technicians to hand-clean only, avoid brushes, sanders and steel wool, skip harsh solvent cleaners, and apply cleaner to a towel rather than flooding the seat, because abrasive methods can remove that topcoat. We follow the same caution: leather-safe chemistry, light agitation, no aggressive scrubbing.

Do not soak perforated leather; liquid forced through the holes can wet the foam underneath and leave dark rings. Over-applying conditioner leaves a greasy film that collects dust.

**Vinyl and plastic.** Mild cleaners and a soft brush beat glossy dressings. A heavy silicone shine looks wet for a day and then turns into a dust magnet, and it can transfer onto clothes.

**Cloth and carpet.** Vacuum first so you are not turning dry dirt into mud. Agitate with the right cleaner in straight overlapping strokes (circular scrubbing spreads soil), then extract. The goal is to lift soil out, not to soak the cushion. Fabric that stays wet is the job that comes back as mildew two weeks later. Park with doors open or run airflow until the seats feel dry to the touch.

**Alcantara and suede-like inserts.** These need dry or nearly dry methods. Too much liquid mats the nap. If your car has a lot of Alcantara, say so when you book so the process matches the trim.

**Headliners.** Glue behind many headliners softens with water and heat. Spot cleaning with minimal moisture is the safe approach. A dripping wet headliner can sag, and that is a repair, not a detail.

## What interior detailing does not include

An interior package stays inside the cabin and door jambs. It is not paint correction, wheel coating or an exterior wash. For outside work, book [exterior detail](https://rotesandroses.com/auto-detailing/exterior-detail/) or [full detail](https://rotesandroses.com/auto-detailing/full-detail/).

It also is not automatic:

- [Odor Treatment](https://rotesandroses.com/odor-removal/) from $134.99
- [Mold removal](https://rotesandroses.com/mold-removal/) (photo-screened pricing)
- [Biohazard decontamination](https://rotesandroses.com/biohazard-decontamination/) from $249 per affected area
- Seat removal and reinstall as a default step
- Child-seat reinstallation (we clean around seats; you reinstall per the seat and vehicle instructions)
- A promise that every old odor is gone after a surface clean

Those boundaries keep the package honest. The service page lists the inclusions; this guide explains the edges.

## Odors, mold and biohazard: when it is not a standard interior

A clean cabin can still smell wrong if the source is still there. Air fresheners and scent sprays add VOCs to a small enclosed space. The U.S. EPA notes that volatile organic compounds come from many household and cleaning products and can affect indoor air quality; a car cabin is a small indoor environment with limited fresh-air exchange when the windows are up. Masking a smell does not remove what is feeding it.

Our [Odor Treatment](https://rotesandroses.com/odor-removal/) starts at $134.99 and reserves about three hours. It is source-first: find what is smelling, clean or treat that material, then decide whether an oxidizer step is warranted. It is not automatically a full interior, and it is not a blanket promise that every odor will be gone before inspection.

Mold is priced on its own. Light to moderate mold runs $299.99 to $449.99. Severe or unsafe mold runs $549.99 to $1,000, with the final number set from photos. The EPA’s mold guidance centers on fixing moisture and removing contaminated materials safely; we clean what we can reach and we decline jobs that need remediation beyond mobile detailing.

Bodily fluids, vomit, urine and feces are [biohazard decontamination](https://rotesandroses.com/biohazard-decontamination/), from $249 per affected area, with photos and safety screening first. Those are not “heavy interior” upgrades.

## How often to book an interior detail

The live interior page notes that monthly works for many drivers, with some cars needing attention every two weeks or weekly once they are on a [maintenance plan](https://rotesandroses.com/maintenance-plans/). Beach sand, pets and kids pull that interval forward. A neglected cabin is an Executive recovery first, then a steadier rhythm.

## DIY between details: what helps and what hurts

Between professional visits, a short routine keeps the cabin from sliding into Executive territory.

Do:

- Shake out and vacuum mats weekly if you drive dirt roads or visit the beach.
- Wipe high-touch surfaces with a barely damp microfiber towel.
- Blot spills immediately. Water first for most drinks; avoid rubbing a stain wider.
- Empty trash so crumbs do not grind into carpet.
- Park with a sunshade in North County heat so plastics and leather take less UV abuse.

Avoid:

- Dish soap on leather or fabric. It leaves residue and can dry finishes.
- Soaking seats with a household carpet machine and leaving them wet overnight.
- Aerosol “odor eliminators” as a substitute for cleaning the source.
- Dressings that leave a shiny film on the dash and steering wheel.
- Any cleaner you have not tested on a hidden spot.

Chemical Guys’ interior restoration guidance and similar pro-oriented writeups repeat the same themes: vacuum first, match the chemistry, control moisture, and finish dry. That is also how we work on a driveway or in a parking lot when we bring the equipment to you.

## How long an interior detail takes

Express interiors usually run 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Executive interiors usually run 4 to 6 hours. Vehicle size, seat count, pet hair and stain load push those windows. Our [how long mobile car detailing takes](https://rotesandroses.com/blog/how-long-mobile-car-detailing-takes/) post puts interior timing next to exterior and full-detail ranges.

You do not need to provide water or power. We bring spot-free deionized water and a generator. Leave room around the car so doors can open fully, and remove loose valuables and trash you want to keep.

## Our perspective: condition first, then the package

— Julian

I price interiors by what I see, not by what the calendar says since the last cleaning. A one-owner sedan with a dusty dash is an Express. The same car after a year of beach days, a shedding dog and a spilled smoothie in the second row is an Executive, and pretending otherwise just produces a disappointing Express.

I also decline the shortcuts that make a cabin look wet-clean and then smell worse a week later. If the source of an odor is still in the foam or under a seat, we talk about odor treatment instead of promising that a wipe-down will fix it. If mold is involved, we look at photos first. The job is finished when the cabin is actually better, not when a package name has been checked off.

## Having us handle it

Rotes & Roses is mobile across North County San Diego. Book from the [interior detail](https://rotesandroses.com/auto-detailing/interior-detail/) page or the main [booking](https://rotesandroses.com/booking/) form. Send photos if the cabin is heavily soiled, mention pets and spills up front, and we confirm the package and price before the deposit.

If you want a recurring reset instead of a one-time recovery, [maintenance plans](https://rotesandroses.com/maintenance-plans/) start from $110 a visit for a sedan on a weekly cadence, with biweekly and monthly options, and every visit is a full detail. For a deeper look at odor or pet hair specifically, see our guides to [car odor removal](https://rotesandroses.com/blog/how-to-get-smell-out-of-car/) and [pet hair removal](https://rotesandroses.com/pet-hair-removal/).
