Most car detailing packages come in three tiers: exterior, interior and full detail. Each one covers a different part of the car, and the price follows vehicle size, condition and how much labor the job takes. Our own published prices in North County San Diego run from $104.99 to $333.48 for an exterior detail, $174.99 to $414.99 for an interior detail, and $234.99 to $594.99 for a full detail. Below you’ll find what each tier normally covers, what pushes a quote up or down, which add-ons are worth paying for, and what to check before a mobile detailer arrives at your driveway.
TL;DR
- Exterior, interior and full detail are the three core packages. A full detail combines the other two, so it costs less than booking both separately.
- Size and condition set the price. Heavy dirt, sand, pet hair or stains mean more labor, and the range inside each package reflects that.
- Add-ons such as paint correction, ceramic coating, headlight restoration and odor treatment are separate services. Pick them based on the problem you actually have.
- With mobile detailing, ask who does the work, whether water and power are supplied, and whether the price is confirmed before the job starts.
- Our packages are $104.99 to $594.99 depending on the tier and vehicle, and we bring our own spot-free water and power.

What car detailing packages include
A detail is a deep clean and restoration of the surfaces of your vehicle. It goes far past a drive-through wash. Names differ from shop to shop (“Deluxe,” “Premium,” “Showroom”), but the structure underneath is almost always the same three tiers.
Exterior detail
An exterior package covers everything outside the cabin. Expect a careful hand wash, wheel and tire cleaning, door jambs, trim and glass cleaning, and decontamination of the paint so it feels smooth rather than gritty. Most finish with a layer of wax or sealant. Higher tiers may add a clay treatment, a light polish or a longer-lasting paint sealant.
Why it matters: grime on paint is not just cosmetic. AAA says a layer of protection such as wax or polish helps keep corrosive substances from sticking to paint and causing rust, and it quotes an expert who suggests waxing once or twice a year. A good exterior package is a convenient way to get that protection applied properly.
See our exterior detail page for the scope of what we do outside the car.
Interior detail
An interior package deals with everything you touch and breathe. A typical list: thorough vacuuming of seats, carpets and trunk, wiping and cleaning the dashboard, console, door panels and vents, cleaning the glass inside, and treating leather or upholstery. Stained carpets and cloth seats may call for steam or extraction. Better packages also handle pet hair, spills and odors.

This is the tier where condition matters most. A commuter sedan with a coffee ring in the cup holder is a very different job from a family SUV with two car seats and a summer of beach sand. Detailers may charge extra labor for heavy conditions such as stains, sand, mud or trash, which is exactly why interior prices have the widest spread.
Our interior detail page explains the process step by step.
Full detail
A full detail is the exterior and interior packages done in one visit. It is the right choice if you are buying or selling a car, getting ready for a season, or have never had the car properly detailed. Doing both in one appointment saves setup time, and that usually shows in the price: a full detail costs less than an exterior and an interior booked separately.
Some shops also include an engine bay cleaning in their top tier. Others sell it separately. Either way, ask whether it is in the quote. Our full car detail page shows what that visit covers.
Quick comparison of the three tiers
| Package | What it covers | Best for | Our published price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exterior detail | Hand wash, wheels, glass, trim, paint protection | Cars that are mechanically fine and cosmetically dull | $104.99 to $333.48 |
| Interior detail | Vacuum, surfaces, glass, upholstery, odors | Family cars, pets, long commutes | $174.99 to $414.99 |
| Full detail | Inside and out in one visit | Resale, first-time detail, yearly reset | $234.99 to $594.99 |
The spread inside each row is the vehicle: a compact coupe sits near the bottom, a large truck or three-row SUV near the top, and condition moves it within that.
What changes the price of a package
The sticker price of a package is a starting point. Five things move the final number.
- Vehicle size. More surface means more time and more product. A two-door car, a sedan, an SUV and a lifted truck are different jobs.
- Condition. Heavy soil, baked-on bugs, sand, mud, stains or trash add labor. The same pattern shows up in detailing cost estimators, which treat condition as a separate input from size.
- Package contents. One shop’s “full detail” may include clay and wax. Another’s may be a wash and vacuum with a fancy name. Compare the line items, not the names.
- Add-ons. Paint correction, ceramic coating, engine bay cleaning and odor treatment are priced separately.
- Who does the work and how. A solo detailer working carefully on one car at a time bills differently from a crew racing through several. Cheap quotes often hide short time on the car.
Prices across the US vary a lot by city. Packages advertised in other metros range from the low hundreds to nearly $900 for exterior-only work on large vehicles, which is why a national average tells you little. What matters is a written, confirmed price for your vehicle in your area.
Add-ons and specialty services: which ones are worth it
Packages clean. Specialty services fix or protect. Here is how to match each to a real problem.
Paint correction
If your paint has swirl marks, light scratches or a hazy look in direct sun, washing will not remove them. Paint correction polishes the clear coat to level out those defects. Our paint correction service starts at $424.99. It is worth doing before a coating, because a coating locks in whatever finish is under it.
Ceramic coating

A ceramic coating is a hardened protective layer on the paint that repels water and dirt and makes washing easier. Our ceramic coating service starts at $1,249.
How much should a coating cost in general? One national parts retailer’s guide puts professional application at roughly $600 to $1,500 for a small car and $1,000 to $3,000 for larger vehicles, with entry-level products lasting one to two years and mid-grade ones around three to five. Three things explain most of the spread:
- Preparation. The paint must be washed, decontaminated and usually corrected first. Prep is often most of the labor.
- Product grade and durability. A coating built for longer life costs more.
- Coverage. Paint only, or paint plus glass, wheels and trim.
If you want a coating on the windshield, we also offer ceramic glass coating in North County San Diego.
Headlight restoration, odor treatment and engine bay
Yellow, foggy headlights hurt night visibility and make a car look older than it is. Headlight restoration starts at $99.99 per pair. Smoke, spilled milk and pet smells need more than a vacuum, and our odor treatment starts at $134.99. An engine bay detail starts at $99.99. All three are on our specialty services page.
Window tint, motorcycles, RVs and boats
Most car detailing packages stop at cars. If you own something else, check that the detailer prices it properly. We detail motorcycles from $164.99, RVs from $9 per foot, and boats from $16.50 per foot, and we install ceramic window tint from $199. You can see the full list on our services page.
How often should you book a detail?
There is no single schedule. A practical rhythm for most drivers:
- A full detail once or twice a year as a reset, ideally before the season that is hardest on your car.
- Wax or sealant once or twice a year if you don’t have a coating, in line with the guidance AAA quotes.
- Interior attention more often if you have kids, pets or a long daily commute.
- Regular maintenance cleaning between big details if you want the car to stay in shape rather than recover every few months.
What you do between details matters too. AAA advises washing by hand or using a touchless wash, skipping washes with foam and bristles, and never using dish detergent, which can strip protective wax and dry out paint.
If you would rather not think about it, our maintenance plans run $110 to $160 a visit weekly, or $175 to $225 a visit monthly, depending on the plan.
Mobile detailing packages: what to check before you book
Mobile detailing packages cover the same work as a shop. The difference is that the detailer comes to wherever the car is parked. The convenience is real, but the setup varies, so ask these questions first.
Water. Does the detailer carry their own, or do they need your hose? A self-contained setup removes a variable from every job, while a customer hookup means confirming access every time. Equipment guides for mobile detailers describe both approaches, with a tank of roughly 50 to 100 gallons giving full independence.
Power. Vacuums, polishers and extraction machines need electricity. Ask whether the detailer brings a generator or inverter, or expects an outlet.
Water quality. Hard tap water leaves spots. Ask if the water is filtered or deionized so panels dry clean.
Location. An apartment garage, a shaded driveway and an office lot all work differently. Ask whether there are limits, such as HOA rules or lack of shade.
Price confirmation. Get the price for your vehicle before work begins, not after.
Who shows up. Ask whether the person you talk to is the person who works on your car.
For us, the answers are simple: we supply the spot-free water and power, so you don’t need to provide either, and we confirm the price before we start. Julian handles every job himself.
Our perspective: why one detailer per job matters
We have seen the same pattern many times: the package name matters less than who is holding the polisher. Two “full details” with the same list of tasks can look completely different, because the difference is time, patience and attention to the small areas, such as seat rails, door jambs, vent slats and the seam where the glass meets the trim.
That is why we run every job with one person, Julian, from start to finish. He talks to you, sees the car, confirms the price, does the work and checks it at the end. Nobody is handed a half-finished car and nobody is rushed to the next appointment. Our standard is that the job isn’t finished until you’re satisfied.
We also include a complimentary multi-point inspection with the service. While the car is clean and under good light, it is easy to spot things you would otherwise miss, and we would rather tell you early than have you find out later.
Our advice on choosing a package:
- If the paint looks fine and the cabin is the problem, start with an interior detail.
- If you have never had a proper detail, or you’re selling, go for the full detail.
- If swirls and scratches bother you, put paint correction first and a coating after it.
- If you want the car to stay good, ask about a maintenance plan so you aren’t starting from scratch each time.

How to compare quotes from different detailers
When you have two or three quotes, line them up on the same basis.
- Scope. List what is included in each: clay or decontamination, wax or sealant, door jambs, wheel wells, steam cleaning, odor work.
- Vehicle category. Make sure each quote is for your actual vehicle size and condition. A sedan price on an SUV is a number that grows later.
- Time. A thorough full detail takes hours, not a short stop. Ask how long the appointment will be.
- What’s included for free. An inspection, a touch-up or a satisfaction guarantee has real value.
- Protection. Ask what is applied at the end and how long it is meant to last. Don’t expect a wax to behave like a coating.
- Add-on pricing. Ask for the cost of extras before you need them.
The lowest number is rarely the best deal. A package that skips the clay step or rushes the interior will need redoing, and the car will look the same in a month.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to detail a car?
It depends on size, condition and package. Our own range in North County San Diego is $104.99 to $333.48 for an exterior detail, $174.99 to $414.99 for an interior, and $234.99 to $594.99 for a full detail. Heavy soil, pet hair and stains add labor, so the final price for your vehicle is confirmed before we begin.
How often should I detail my car?
A full detail once or twice a year suits most drivers, with wax or sealant applied once or twice a year if you don’t have a coating, which matches the advice AAA quotes. Drivers with pets, kids or long commutes often add interior work more often. A maintenance plan spreads the work out.
How much should a ceramic coating cost?
Professional application commonly runs from several hundred to a few thousand dollars, depending on vehicle size, prep and product grade, according to a national retailer’s guide. Our ceramic coating starts at $1,249, and paint correction beforehand is quoted separately.
Do I need to provide water or power for mobile detailing?
Not with us. We bring spot-free water and our own power, so the car can be detailed in a driveway, a parking lot or an apartment space. Other detailers may ask for a hose or outlet, so confirm it before you book.
What is the difference between a detail and a car wash?
A wash removes surface dirt. A detail cleans, decontaminates and protects every surface, inside and out, by hand. AAA also recommends hand washing or touchless washes over washes with foam and bristles to protect the paint.
